In Somerset and Pulaski County we know a lot about being the capital of things. For years, with our friends just to the south, we have been the capital of the houseboat industry. Now as the result of SPEDA’s hard work we are The Capital of Lake Cumberland. And very soon, you will either begin or end your experience on the bourbon trail right here in Somerset. We’re proud of those things but we’re gonna go a step further. With the synergy that AppHarvest has, with their vision, with their execution, and now our potential partnerships, I say we take our friends in the Netherlands on. Let’s take our friends and allies in Israel on. And let’s make Somerset and Pulaski County and the rest of the Commonwealth the Ag-Tech Capital of the World.

Agriculture has a special place in the history of Kentucky. That rich history still goes on today. And we’d be remiss if we didn’t stop and thank those that have been farming in the Commonwealth for quite some time. We appreciate those efforts.

But we also look to the future with AppHarvest. They’re changing an industry. They’re changing the future and they’re brightening it in so many ways. This brightening is just another area where the synergy with Somerset and Pulaski County continues. As many of you know and remember, we talked about brightening up Somerset. Lighting it up in fact. We wanted to light it up literally with lights in our alleys and streetscape. We wanted to light it up with art and with music. We promised that we would promote our eastern Kentucky heritage. That we would leverage the beautiful lakes in the southern part of the state, we would enhance our tourism efforts, and we would look to the west and promote art and agriculture. Can you imagine a better company to promote that vision and to partner with than the one we are celebrating today?

Finally, I’d like to talk about something each of you knows intimately well. The fact that Somerset and Pulaski County and this region is beautiful because of the quality of life that we offer. The improving quality of place that we’re experiencing. Like so many cities in Kentucky, it sets us apart. We also have to learn to work together, community to community, county to county, partnering when we can. When we have to compete we do so gracefully.

But in the end, it’s not just about us. It’s about helping other people. Building up and not tearing down. And that’s exactly what they’re going to be doing on this beautiful land later. So AppHarvest, Somerset, and Pulaski County — let’s grow.
